The motto of Team RFC® is; Bringing Inspiration to the World of Motorsports. Our method is by providing chaplains, primarily volunteer chaplains, for motorsport events across North America.
There are other ministries, large and small, serving across the motorsports landscape. We seek collegial relationships with them so that together there will be an effective presence for Jesus Christ at every motorsports venue. We continue these relationships each December when we coordinate the efforts of nine different ministries to put on a non-denominational chapel service at the Performance Racing Industries trade show in Orlando, FL. We have shared chaplains between ministries, covered events for one another, collaborate on printing racing related Bibles, and coordinate with our World Wide Web presence.
The largest program is Racers For Christ® through which chaplains serve at auto, motorcycle, boat and airplane races. Rodders For Christ® is the program providing chaplains for car shows, rod runs, and cruise-ins. The Restorers For Christ® chaplains serve the vintage and classic car restoration community. Pullers For Christ chaplain operate in the increasingly popular arena of truck and tractor pulling competitions. RFC Garage is a teen outreach program where youth learn about working on cars and working in motorsports alongside seasoned mentors in a Christ-centered environment. RFC kids is a recently launched children’s ministry with fun activities and teaching for kids at selected multiple day racing events. Iowa Speedway Ministries has come under Team RFC’s umbrella as they serve the needs of competitors, support staff, and guests at this facility in Newton, IA.
We continue to expand a daily e-mail prayer chain to the Team RFC® chaplains across North America. It has grown to where chaplains from other motorsport ministries are posting prayer needs as well.
Rev. Larry Smiley, of Arcadia, OK, joined this ministry in 1997 and became the president in 2005. Rev. Paul Neighbors, of Mesa, AZ, joined the staff in 2000 and became the executive director in 2004. Rev. Jim Jack, on staff since 1994, calls Gilbert, AZ his home and serves as the Field Ministry Director.
During 2011, 57 new chaplains were added to Team RFC®. These 295 chaplains, 96% of whom volunteer their time, were involved in 2,198 ministry events. They officiated for 13 weddings and conducted 94 funerals or memorial services. During the year they made 146 hospital visits or sick calls independent from those made directly in conjunction with a motorsporting event. The chaplains conducted 1101 chapel services with a total of 49,830 people in attendance.
