Have you ever had one of those nights where everything feels heavy?
The kind of night where you replay every conversation in your head…Question every decision…Wonder if what you’re doing is even making a difference anymore.
Paul had just walked through one of the hardest moments of his ministry. In Acts 23, everything around him seemed to be falling apart. He had been arrested in Jerusalem, falsely accused, beaten by an angry crowd, and dragged into the middle of chaos because of his faith in Jesus.
The religious leaders hated his message. The crowd wanted him silenced. Soldiers had to physically pull Paul away just to keep him alive. Imagine the exhaustion, the loneliness, and the uncertainty he must have felt that night.
Maybe Paul was wondering, “Did I fail? Is my ministry finished? What happens next?”
And then Acts 23:11 gives us one of the most powerful moments in the book of Acts: “The following night the Lord stood by him and said, ‘Take courage…’”
Before God changed Paul’s situation, He strengthened Paul’s spirit.
I love that the verse says the Lord “stood by him.” Paul was not abandoned in the prison cell. He was not forgotten in the struggle. Jesus Himself came near to remind Paul that Heaven was still in control.
And then Jesus gave Paul a promise: “For as you have testified to the facts about me in Jerusalem, so you must testify also in Rome.”
In other words: “Paul, I’m not done with you yet.”
That is the heart of this story. When Paul could only see the prison, God could see the purpose. When Paul could only see the opposition, God could see the assignment ahead.
How many times in our own lives do we feel trapped by discouragement, fear, or uncertainty?
Yet in those moments, God still comes near and says, “Take courage.”
