Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” — Luke 9:62

When Jesus spoke these words, He wasn’t trying to discourage anyone—He was calling His followers to a deeper kind of faith. He knew that following Him would require focus, courage, and determination. Just like a farmer guiding the plow must keep his eyes forward to make a straight path, we too must keep our hearts and minds set on Christ.

It’s easy to look back—to dwell on past mistakes, regrets, or the comfort of what’s familiar. But Jesus reminds us that the best life He has for us is ahead, not behind. When we fix our gaze on Him, He gives us strength for every step, clarity for every decision, and peace in every storm.

If you’ve been in ministry for several years or just getting started, don’t lose heart. The road may be rough at times, but He walks beside you. Every step of obedience draws you closer to His purpose and joy. Don’t let yesterday’s failures or fears hold you back from what God is doing today.

As you hopefully begin to slowdown a bit for the offseason, I would encourage you to continue to look forward, keeping your hands on the plow, allowing God to lead you, strengthen you, and guide you.  C.S. Lewis stated that, “True discipleship requires undivided attention and a future-oriented focus.”

Keep your hands on the plow, your eyes on Jesus, and your heart full of hope. The field you’re working in—your family, your faith, your calling—is worth it.

You are not going backward—God is leading you forward.
